Q&A with Sensei Franky
Delve into the essence of Mushinkan through the journey, philosophy, and teachings of Sensei Franky.
With nearly 40 years of martial arts experience — beginning his training at the age of three — Sensei Franky remains dedicated to upholding his father's legacy, imparting the values of discipline, harmony, and personal growth.

History
Q: What is the history behind Mushinkan, and who founded it?
A:
Mushinkan was founded in 1965 by Kaiso Ramasamy, a pioneer in Malaysian martial arts. Trained under Gozo Shioda, the founder of Yoshinkan Aikido, Kaiso brought Aikido to Malaysia, sharing his knowledge and skills with the local community. Alongside his expertise in Judo and Kendo, Kaiso envisioned Mushinkan as a dojo that would preserve martial arts traditions while fostering personal growth and discipline. Today, I carry forward his legacy with dedication and passion, continuing to uphold the vision he passed on to me.
Q: What does the name "Mushinkan" mean?
A:
“Mushinkan” represents the concept of "no-mind"—a state of mental clarity, focus, and calmness. It reflects my father’s belief in mastering the mind to unlock limitless potential.
Sensei Franky’s Journey
Q: When did you start training in martial arts?
A:
I began my martial arts journey at the age of 3. My home was also a dojo, where my father, Kaiso Ramasamy, trained and guided me. Martial arts were not just an activity—it was a way of life that shaped my understanding of discipline, focus, and movement. Now, with nearly 40 years of experience, I continue to grow and share the teachings that have been an integral part of my life.
Q: What inspired you to continue your father’s legacy?
A:
At first, I saw it as my duty to carry on his name and teachings. Over time, it became my passion to create a sanctuary where students could grow in skill, confidence, and character. I find immense joy in helping those who feel overlooked discover their potential.

Philosophy
Q: What is the core philosophy of Mushinkan?
A:
Mushinkan is guided by three principles:
-
Believe: Trust in your actions and techniques to build confidence.
-
Understand: Look beyond surface judgments to gain humility and insight.
-
Realize: Be aware of your surroundings to foster mindfulness and gratitude.
These principles guide students in martial arts and their personal lives.
Lasting Lessons
Q: What advice would you give to someone starting martial arts?
A:
Live with love. Approach martial arts with sincerity and kindness, not with the intention to harm or prove yourself to others. Martial arts is about understanding yourself, mastering your emotions, and finding strength in balance.
Q: What is the most important mindset for training?
A:
Train with humility and focus. Martial arts is not just about techniques—it’s about fortifying the mind, controlling emotions, and acting with purpose and respect.
Dojo Culture
Q: What kind of environment does Mushinkan aim to foster?
A:
Mushinkan is a sanctuary. When students step into the dojo, they leave their personal challenges at the door. It’s a no-drama environment where everyone can focus on self-improvement, humility, and mutual respect.

Q: What type of students do you hope to attract?
A:
I hope to attract kind, open-minded individuals who are eager to learn and grow. Whether they are beginners or experienced practitioners, I want students who are willing to respect themselves, others, and the teachings of the dojo.
